Sallé, Marie

   dancer, choreographer
   Born in Paris, Marie Sallé enjoyed her first successes at the Foire theaters and then at the Paris opéra (1727), where she appeared in the opera-ballets of jean-baptiste lully. She performed for the royal court and danced in several of molière's comedies, then appeared in London for three seasons. In Pygmalion (1734), when she danced the role of Galatea, she abandoned the traditional heavy robe and collar and, substituting a simple tunic, introduced a modification to the style of ballet costuming. Returning to Paris (1737), she danced Les Indes galantes and created the main role in Castor et Pollux by jean-philippe rameau. A friend of voltaire, David Garrick, and jean-georges noverre, Sallé played a definitive role in the evolution of classical ballet to a more active form.
